About 90% of our nation’s population lives in greater metropolitan areas. Free mapping services have focused on this density of population enabling most residents of the lower 48 to be easily searched by address providing easy access to these locations. But that leaves 10% of our nation’s population and all of the related businesses that are not easily located. Further, these residents and businesses do not readily receive emergency services, have difficulty receiving shipments, and to the technology driven world, almost don’t exist!
This issue was first addressed in the 80’s, when legislation was originally passed to eliminate inconsistent addressing schemas. The whole nation was supposed to be converted to this template: #### + Street Name + City + State + Zip. The timeline to complete this task nationwide has been extended and extended. Yet, geographically speaking, the majority of the continental United States remains unconverted. State and local budget deficits have mandated several states to openly cancel all initiatives to pursue “geocoding” their rural areas for this year and likely the next few.
